Arnold and Johnstone are your structural design experts specialising in residential, commercial, and industrial projects.

 

Established in Tauranga over 35 years ago Arnold and Johnstone is a trusted and experienced Structural Engineering Consultancy. Recent expansion into the Waikato region has seen the opening of our Hamilton office.

We are a small personable team that strives to provide cost-effective and pragmatic solutions for our clients.

We pride ourselves on quality documentation, open communication, and collaboration between clients, design, and construction teams.

Raman Forbes

Director, Chartered Professional Engineer

BE (Hons), CMEngNZ, CPEng

  • Raman is a Chartered Professional Engineer who is the director of Arnold & Johnstone.

    He has worked in Tauranga since moving from Auckland in 2001 and has over 20 years of experience. Raman previously worked for both small and large Consultants and Contractors in Tauranga, Brisbane, and Auckland before starting at Arnold & Johnstone.

    He has a vast range of experience including light industrial projects for a number of kiwifruit packhouses and cool stores in the Bay of Plenty, warehouses at the Port of Tauranga and Tauriko, heavy industrial projects in Australia, industrial work for timber mills in Kawerau, and completing the structural design and documentation for a large number of residential projects for local Architects and Draughtsman.

    He has also completed a number of earthquake assessment and strengthening projects following the 2011 Christchurch Earthquakes. Raman’s passion is providing a high level of service to his clients by providing practical and cost-effective solutions.

    When Raman does get some downtime he enjoys spending it with family and friends and supporting his kids’ sports teams. Based in Mount Maunganui, he enjoys keeping active, playing golf, and surfing during the warmer months.

Gavin Douglas

Senior Structural Engineer

BE (Hons), MEngNZ

  • Gavin is a Structural Engineer and co-owner of Arnold and Johnstone.

    He has experience in all stages of the design and construction phases of residential, commercial, educational, and light industrial buildings.

    He has over 20 years of experience since graduating from Canterbury University, with the majority of this time working for consultants in Hamilton and London.
    Since starting at Arnold & Johnstone in early 2017, Gavin has set up a small office in central Hamilton, working with a core group of local Clients and Architects on a number of interesting and exciting projects.

    Recently he has been involved in a number of alterations and extensions to school buildings and Council facilities throughout the Waikato. Over the last ten years, he has completed numerous seismic assessments and earthquake strengthening designs for buildings throughout New Zealand.

    Gavin has been a committee member of the Waikato Branch of Engineering NZ since 2018 and has proactively organised several events.

    When not at work, Gavin can be found trying to keep up with his three children, including coaching his son's football team, while also playing and managing one of Melville Utd’s old boys teams.

    He can also be spotted at CrossFit classes – trying to keep fit!

Nick McLean

Structural Engineer

BE (Hons), MEngNZ

  • Nick is a Structural Engineer, graduating from Canterbury University in 2012.

    Based in our Hamilton office, Nick works alongside Gavin on a range of commercial, residential, and industrial projects. Nick has a significant amount of experience with seismic assessment and strengthening of existing buildings.

    Nick is a keen golfer so on the weekends he can often be found out on the golf course.

Frank Smith

Structural Engineer

BE (Hons), CMEngNZ, CPEng

  • Frank is a Chartered Professional Engineer who graduated from Auckland University in 2015.

    Frank has experience across a wide range of commercial, industrial, and residential projects.

    He is an integral part of the team and is responsible for the design and management of projects.

    Outside of work Frank is kept very busy training and competing as a triathlete. 

 

Graham Webb

Senior Structural CAD / Revit Designer

  • Graham is an Autocad and Revit Designer with 15 years of experience in the industry.

    Based in the Tauranga office, Graham has come from a large engineering consultancy and worked on an array of commercial and industrial projects.

    Graham keeps very active both training and competing in Triathlons.

Danielle Forbes

Office Administrator

  • Danielle heads the office to make sure everything runs smoothly.

    She is involved in many different parts of the business, from budgets and equipment to project set up and invoicing. If you need something sorted get in touch with Danielle.
